Bruises are the classic reason people reach for arnica. Here is what the Arnica Patch label says about them, and what studies of other arnica products have found.
Arnica Patch is a homeopathic patch. Its five active ingredients are each at 50M HPUS: Arnica Montana (bruising, muscle strain), Hypericum Perforatum (pain), Ledum Palustre (swelling, pain), Rhus Toxicodendron (sprains, strains, swelling, pain) and Ruta Graveolens (strains). The label lists its use as the reduction of swelling and pain associated with joint sprains, muscle strains, shin splints, dislocations, overuse injuries and bruising. It also states: claims based on traditional homeopathic practice, not accepted medical evidence.
None of these studies tested Arnica Patch itself. Most tested other kinds of arnica preparation, so their results should not be read as evidence about a homeopathic patch. Overall, the evidence is mixed.
See a healthcare professional for bruises that appear without a cause, are very large or painful, keep growing, or come with a lump; if you bruise easily while taking blood thinners; or after a significant injury.
Stop use and ask a doctor if your condition worsens, irritation occurs, or symptoms persist for more than 7 days or clear up and occur again within a few days. See a healthcare professional promptly for severe pain, significant swelling, a joint that gives way or locks, or bruising you cannot explain.
